For good placement & to save money doing it, it's best to build-in quality from the ground up. The process of attaining organic (non-paid) search engine rankings is basically like a 3-legged stool.

First there is the file and meta-tag information. Tags are the page titles and descriptions contained within HTML code, with only the page 'title' visible to your viewers. The keywords meta-tag may still play a role with minor search engines, but is diminished or ignored by most, because of rampant abuse in attempts to generate traffic.

Second is your actual page content, it’s relevance to what’s contained in the meta-tag data discussed above, and how the information is cross-referenced (linked). There are two components to the content—the amount of meaningful (relevant) text, and how that content is structured and prioritized within the layout. Google analyzes your pages using closely-held algorithms, to determine how well they relate to given subjects. As with our first “leg”, the point here is to choose the correct words, which are the ones people actually use the most when searching. These may not be at all what you’d expect – this takes research. Plus, they should draw upon your marketing plan/goals.

Third, is link popularity. Google was among the first to figure that if a lot of other sites that relate to your subject point to you – you must be pretty important in your category and deserve more “weight” for such popularity, thus a higher ranking.

So our three legs are: 

1. on-page factors - content based;
2. on-site factors - navigation/structure based; and,
3. off-site factors - link popularity & page rank.

There are, of course, many other methods – some tricks, some legitimate, but these are the basics. There is no substitute for the real search engine promotion and marketing (SEM) groundwork, if you want long-term success.

A word here about “paying-to-play” in the search engines. There are situations where it makes sense to spend a few dollars to guarantee your site submission gets considered and listed in a timely fashion. Especially true for brand-new online ventures.

An investment can be made through one search/database, who in turn submits to other players. is one such example. Then there are the recent search marketing and advertising consolidations between Microsoft and Yahoo!   Yahoo! charges a $299 annual fee for a listing in their directory, and while pricey, for you small startup businesses, it's still a link worth having.

If you need to expand a new website's reach quickly, earmark search engine dollars targeting Google Adwords, for example. Be aware that less savoury services might try to get you to sign-up for pay-per-click services, with additional fees ongoing.  Read their fine print!
